This pilot project supported Chinese takeaways to develop, display and maintain a Healthy Choice Menu in their businesses. The menu emphasized nutritional balance and reinforced the value of traditional Chinese good cooking practices.
This project was funded by the British Heart Foundation and delivered in partnership with the Chinese Takeaway Association (UK).
It aimed to contribute to the heart health of the UK population as a whole, e.g. cardiovascular disease and non-insulin dependent diabetes.
The training seminars highlighted:
- Basic principles of good nutrition
- The importance of choice of cooking methods and the selection of ingredients
- How awareness of how food and exercise can contribute to the prevention of heart disease
Following the training sessions which took place in London, Birmingham and Manchester, participants were awarded a certificate which entitled them to display the Healthy Takeaways Project logo. For project evaluation, questionnaires were designed for takeaway customers to fill in.
To keep up with the healthy cooking theme, the Centre has also published a healthy cook book titled Fresh Chinese. Written by our nutrition consultant, Wynnie Chan, and with a foreword by celebrity chef, Ken Hom, Fresh Chinese brings you a feast of over 80 mouthwatering recipes that won't pile on the pounds.
